Missouri Educator educates youth on the role of healthy soil in filtering and purifying water

Joni Harper joined the University of Missouri Extension as an agronomy specialist in 2007 and transitioned into a natural resources field specialist role in 2022, serving 26 counties in Missouri. She earned both her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (B.S.A.) and Master of Science (M.S.) degrees from the University of Arkansas, specializing in Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences.

For over 17 years, Joni has been an active member of two Soil & Water Conservation District boards, where she has played a role in promoting soil and water conservation efforts and leading educational initiatives. Her work spans a variety of natural resource conservation and stewardship projects, including greenhouse and vegetable learning tours, grazing schools, Master Gardener and Master Naturalist programs, native warm-season grass establishment, agroforestry, woodland stewardship, and forage fertility research and demonstrations.

Through her work, Joni provides educational programs for youth and adults, emphasizing the critical importance of protecting natural resources. Notably, her collaboration with 4-H has enabled her to educate hundreds of youths on the role of healthy soil in filtering and purifying water. These programs have helped young learners understand the significance of maintaining safe and healthy water systems, fostering awareness and responsibility for natural resource conservation.

Joni is passionate about education and outreach, providing valuable programs for the citizens of Missouri that highlight the importance of protecting natural resources. By partnering with a wide array of agencies, institutions, and organizations, Joni has expanded her reach to diverse audiences across Missouri. Her efforts have equipped individuals and communities with the knowledge and tools to recognize the vital roles of soil and water in maintaining environmental health.  These programs instill a sense of responsibility and awareness among participants, promoting the preservation of safe and sustainable water systems for future generations.

Joni is a field specialist in natural resources where she serves all 26 Missouri counties. Prior to serving in this role Joni was a agronomy specialist for the University of Missouri Extension. She has a B.S.A. (’02) and M.S. (’05) from the University of Arkansas where she majored in Crop, Soil, & Environmental Sciences.
