2015 AWRA Summer Specialty Conference: Climate Change Adaption

June 15, 2015 @ 8:00 am - June 17, 2015 @ 5:00 pm

It will be held June 15-17 in New Orleans (NOLA) the Crescent City, in Southern Louisiana, one of the areas in the United States most potentially impacted by climate change. The conference will provide a critical path toward informing climate adaptation decisions on the ground.

Designed to spark dialogue among water resource specialists, hydrologists, ecologists, meteorologists, engineers, planners, lawyers and others – this is a must-attend event if you are aiming to make a difference.

Highlights Include:

  • Keynote Speaker: Jeffrey Herbert, New Orleans Chief Resilience Officer, who will speak about his city and the International 100 Resilient Cities Initiative and
  • Luncheon Speaker: Bruce Mowry, City Engineer, City of Miami Beach presenting “Miami Beach – Rising Above Sea Level,” highlighting actions that are being taken right now.
  • Session tracks: Economics of Adaptation; Engineering and Infrastructure; Data, Models and Tools; Planning for Action; Extreme Events; Drought Preparedness; Water Supply, Resilience and Policy; Agriculture and Vegetation Changes, Social and Cultural Factors; Coastal Resilience; Climate Vulnerability Assessments; and Planning and Adaptation Case Studies. And, of course, there will be ample time to dialogue with others and view the professional posters including a Networking Reception.
  • Sunday pre-conference events:
    • A field trip to coastal marshes and cypress forests to see the issues impacting coastal wetlands and what restoration efforts are being taken or,
    • A deep sea fishing trip. More details to come!

NOLA is a perfect place for a conference on climate change adaption. Plan your trip to enjoy the conference and the French Quarter just outside the conference hotel. Jazz, great food, voodoo, the French Quarter has them all. The home of great musicians living and dead, Al Hirt, Pete Fountain, Antoine “Fats” Domino to name a few.

Climate adaptation must be founded on firm technical information, but the state of the science is still evolving. Join us and begin creating your map to navigate this evolution!
