Environmental Benefits of Organic Agriculture: Water Quality
September 23, 2015 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Organic farming practices, such as the application of composted animal manure and the use of forage legumes and green manures within extended grain cropping rotations, can optimize soil nutrient release and plant nutrient uptake, and subsequently improve water quality. Well-managed organic systems rely mainly on slow-release forms of nutrients which reduce the risk of nutrient runoff and leaching. Enhanced soil structure, water infiltration, and nutrient retention also reduce the risk of groundwater pollution. This session will present scientific research examining the water quality benefits of organic farming practices. This webinar is the fourth in a four-part series exploring the environmental benefits of organic agriculture.
